A Break Down Of Current Boko Haram/Yusufiyya Factions And Organizational Structure

Before I begin: This article will appear in parts on the blog roll. While these parts are being written and posted, I will not have time to handle any other topics, save one or two outstanding ones (including an analysis of the Shekau Caliphate video two months late, and a breakdown of forces involved in this war). So unless the Army captures Shekau, Al-Barnawi or Sheikh Bukar alive, or Boko Haram storms a Government House somewhere, I will not (If Allah Wills) digress of from this series. Obama’s Smart Syria Play

If you  ask me I will tell you that America watched the Cancer of Al-Baghdadi and his Islamic State spread from Syria back into Iraq to create an excuse to bomb Bashar Al-Assad in Syria.

Remember earlier Obama wanted to carry out airstrikes against Syria’s government in retaliation for a highly questionable chemical attack, despite the fact that earlier in 2013 Iraq arrested over 150 Islamic State of Iraq affiliated takfiri terrorists who were preparing chemical weapons in Baghdad with chemicals imported from Kuwait, Germany and Saudi Arabia. Obama’s airstrikes plan was put on hold because the American an Western public saw through the flimsy sham. Instead of going to bomb Assad a little as punishment for using ‘chemical weapons’ on civilians, the American public understood he was going to use the cover of that to use the US Airforce to serve as the Free Syrian Army’s air force a la Libya where Obama used the lie of protecting ‘civilians’ to use the US Airforce to help the rebels defeat Gaddafi.

Anyways to save face after the American public opposed his adventurism in Syria, he claimed he needed Congressional approval to bomb Syria, thinking that McCain an Lindsey Graham (the two vultures that thrive on consuming corpses) would get it for him. Surprise! He would have lost in Congress, so Putin graciously offered him a way out of his rope I.e the agreement to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal.

After that what happened? Along came ISIS or IS as it is now known or Da’ash to the Arabs. Suddenly Obama authorized the transfer of scores of millions of dollars of heavy weaponry to the moderate ‘Syrian Opposition’ (what a joke!) knowing fully well the so-called moderate rebels were bed partners or unwilling underdogs of Da’ash and Surprise! Surprise! All of Obama’s weapons largesse ended up flowing first to Jabhatun-Nusrah and Islamic Front units which then took these weapons and defected to ISIS. In other cases ISIS simply showed up and raided the moderate and Islamist rebels and carted off their newly arrived American Candy Bars  including sophisticated anti-tank missiles.

It was only a while but Al-Baghdadi’s ‘goon army’ showed up across the border to liberate their home base of Iraq with….wait for it… America’s contributions to the liberation of Syria in tow, including those million-dollar anti-tank guided missiles Mr Obama proudly sent forth to do battle on his behalf in Damascus.

With American weaponry and skills honed in Syria fighting against the ultra-skilled Hizbullah and the mediocre Syrian Army, Al-Baghdadi’s Army of the Goons bested the million man Iraqi security forces and captured more American weapons as they marched across Iraq seizing whatever caught their fancy. Meanwhile Mr Obama or Mr Yes-We-Scan (depending on what you are on this week) sat in his Oval Office and preened and smiled widely like a Cheshire cat as Al-Baghdadi’s Goon Army won one victory or the other, all the while making sure to scream and point hysterically like a pissed-off prostitute “See ISIS is becoming a threat to world peace”..

Then when he got tired of watching this charade play out, Mr Obama got down to the real purpose of his games in supplying weapons to the rebels in Syria in the first place: organizing a Coalition Of The Willing (remember them?) To Bomb The Hell Out Of Syria And Reestablish Control In Iraq. Or like I call them the Coalition Of Willing American B****es And Lackeys.

Mr Obama was incredibly aided or some would say he had the incredibly good fortune to have two Americans beheaded on YouTube by IS executioners including a British accented one now called Jihad Johnny.

Now the noise blast in the world’s capitals is that IS is a threat that needs to be eliminated before it strikes the homeland (America). And unsurprisingly the American public is buying it (polls show two thirds of Americans support airstrikes against IS in Syria and Iraq). All it took was two beheadings, a hoarse Obama screaming ‘Islamic Terrorists!’ and John Kerry and McCain conjuring up memories of 9/11 to get the American public to sign up for Airstrikes in Syria and Iraq and to put boots back on the ground in Iraq. Already there are over a thousand US troops in Iraq (so much for get out of Iraq). And then again Obama is also getting what he wanted in the beginning : regime change by US sponsored means. Maliki of Iraq who rejected a US military presence in his country that will not be accountable to Iraq has found himself out of office. Obama is already making plans for Congress to fund the so-called ‘moderate’ Syrian Opposition with billions of dollars until Assad falls, while the USAF will be flying over Syrian skies dropping bombs on IS at first, but imagine if another ‘Chemical Attack’ or ‘Staged Massacre’ by Assad’s forces or the Shabiha takes place? Will the World’s Police and the Defender of Freedom (ironic when one looks at the Patriot Act) and Democracy (Amusing if you consider Washington’s record of overthrowing Democratic governments globally) be able to stand by and watch when it has its jets over the area already? No it cannot! Like Mr Obama and his predecessors say ‘it’ has a ‘God-Given’ mandate to protect.

In summary whoever concocted the plan Obama is following far must really be an evil genius mastermind.. Unfortunately for Baghdadi and co, they are pawns in a far bigger game. But again even a inconspicuous pawn sometimes may kill a King..

September started with an ominous bang for this
country. Boko Haram insurgents over ran a town
called Bama, in Borno State. As usual, the
administration is trying to put a brave face on this
alarming development, forgetting that this is the
Information Technology Age, with diverse news
sources available to the citizenry.
There has been a spate of denials about the loss of
Bama. The official line is that insurgents suffered
heavy casualties and the assault was successfully
countered by the military. Yet the fact that in the
wake of the attack a curfew was suddenly imposed
on Maiduguri, gives a strong indication that
something is gravely amiss. Even the contradictory
explanations are enough indication that the
situation in Bama is not the way it is being
presented to the public.
To highlight the gravity of what is unfolding, it is
important to state that Bama is approximately 40
kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State
capital. Once known as the “Home of Peace”, it
had a population of over one million before the
recent influx of persons displaced from surrounding
areas by the insurgents.
In the same way that Boko Haram evolved from a
bunch of religious zealots into a rag-tag guerilla
group, and eventually a deadly force of insurgents,
so has its overall strategy metamorphosed at an
alarming rate. Currently it appears to be at that
phase where controlling territory has become
paramount on its agenda. Hitherto the group
seemed content with violent raids on villages, and
attacks against the military in classic guerrilla
style. The emphasis at this point seems to be one
of occupation with Damboa, Gwoza and other
towns in Borno being taken over. The same tactical
acquisition is playing out in Yobe and Adamawa
Should Bama be fully under the control of Boko
Haram, it would mean that the only major towns in
Borno left under government control are Biu,
Kukawa and Maiduguri. One glance at a map of
Nigeria would vividly reveal what is happening to
the country’s territorial integrity within the North
It does appear that the one thing government has
done consistently since the emergence of Boko
Haram’s terror campaign, is to grossly
underestimate the insurgency and the major
objective of the insurgents. Boko Haram has never
hidden its desire to establish its own brand of
Shari’a in the country. No doubt it sounds like
some hallucination that a bunch of zealots cum
rag-tag insurgents would think it is possible to
take over a country the size of Nigeria.
But the people behind Boko Haram are not mere
wishful thinkers. Over and over again they have
demonstrated that they are intelligent, skillful and
operating from a carefully plotted template. The
image they publicly project of being illiterate serves
as an effective façade for underestimation. Behind
that deceptive mask though, the story is totally
The state they seek to create is a throwback to the
pre-colonial period when a different regime of
territorial configurations existed, especially in that
region. It is no coincidence that Boko Haram has
its tentacles in Cameroon, Niger and Chad. A bit of
history should be exquisitely handy at this point.
There was once a Kanem-Borno Empire covering
territory in today’s Chad and Nigeria, and extending
into parts of modern Southern Libya, Eastern Niger
and Northern Cameroon. As a polity, its dominance
lasted between the 11th and 18th centuries. While
theories of its origin are diverse, its interplay with
Islam is more specific especially during the reign of
Idris Aloma.
Borno’s decline, and the emergence of the Sokoto
Caliphate, made it a marginalised state. The
exclusion soon led to the adoption of the “more
violent Mahdism as it spread westward from
Sudanic Africa. A strand of Islam that encouraged
militancy and opposition to authority, this ‘menace’
school of thought preached that the Mahdi
(‘saviour’) would reappear in times of difficulty.
Muslims would be rid of oppression, the unfaithful
killed and Islam would triumph over evil, with
equity, peace and riches for all to ensure.” The
message has continued to reverberate with
sections of the populace from that time, through
Colonial rule and to the present dispensation.
It is a historical context that strongly influenced
those behind Boko Haram. The creation of a new
constituency that evokes a seeming Gold Age is a
major driving force. It is no mistake that the
established key players in the conglomeration
called Boko Haram (The Jamaa’atu Ahlis-Sunnah
Lid-Da’wati Wal-Jihaad of Abubakar Shekau,
Jamaa’atu Ahlis-Sunnah Ahlis-Sunnah Lid-Da’wati
Wal-Jihaad of Sheikh Bukar Al-Barnawi, Ansorul-
Muslimiina Fii Bilaadis-Sudan led by Abu Usamah
Al-Ansori, and Haraktul-Muhajiriina wal-Mujahidiin
led by Khalid Al-Barnawi) are a representation of
the parts of the ancient Kanem-Borno Empire. The
recruitment of fighters has focused on the same
areas namely Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria.
Chad’s long history of instability has ensured that
there is a ready pool of experienced battle-
hardened conscripts. The underdevelopment in
Niger, parts of Nigeria and Cameroon, also offer
fertile recruitment grounds. The recruitment drive in
both Niger and Cameroon is only coming to light
because of the increased cross-border attacks.
Boko Haram’s sophistication became evident on
March 14, this year when it attacked the Giwa
Military Barracks in Maiduguri. It had given an
indication of its new capabilities in an earlier attack
on the Maiduguri-based Composite Group Air Force
base on December, 2013.
Bewildered, like most Nigerians by the audacity of
both attacks and posting the visuals on the
internet, Abiodun Ladepo took the pains to analyse
both video recordings. He raised questions which
he demanded President Jonathan should address to
his National Security Team. He observed thus: “The
Giwa Barracks attack is the single most humiliating
incident for the previously dreaded Nigerian Army. I
will forever be befuddled by the fact that for 24
whole minutes, the terrorists did not receive in-
coming, defensive fire from the army. In this video
( ), you
will not see the terrorists scampering for cover to
avoid incoming grenades or heavy machine gun
fire. It is as if they are attacking a compound
occupied by enfeebled Octogenarians. It is a
monumental embarrassment for our army.”
The embarrassment has continued with
orchestrated denials, including the “tactical
manouevre” justification of the Ngala-Gambarou
incident which security analyst Bridget Johnson
described as a historical first for Nigeria.
Despite the official position about Bama, an
independent source has described in graphic
military language how the insurgents used artillery
and armoured vehicles (including a BTR and
several Otokar APCs and ARVs) to launch a dawn
attack, eventually forcing over 300 soldiers to break
through insurgent lines and retreat to Maiduguri.
Most of the equipment are Nigerian Army supplies
which the insurgents had taken from armouries
that had been over run in previous attacks.
Whether Bama has fallen or not, there is an
imminent danger which can no longer be masked
with spin. What the insurgents have done in the
past few months is a tactical encirclement of
Maiduguri. An exercise that has included sacking
communities to stock up supplies, blowing up
bridges and even disrupting electricity supply to
Maiduguri. Steadily a noose of siege is being
created around the city.
There is a method to the seeming madness of the
insurgents. The fall of Maiduguri will not only
witness a horrendous carnage, but will mark the
beginning of something ominous for the country.
One Intelligence source even claims that the
insurgents’ code-name for the current phase of
their attack is Al-Bidayah or The Beginning.
What is playing out is eerily reminiscent of how
ISIS gained territory and found a platform to
expand its horrendous quest. Learning from the
setback of Al-Shabaab and the gains of ISIS, Boko
Haram may succeed in sucking Nigeria into a
“Forever War”, with the insurgents having the
capabilities, including looting and kidnapping, to
survive for a long time as the Lord’s Resistance
Army (LRA) is doing in Uganda.
Even if Bama keeps changing hands, Gwoza
provides an ideal spot for gaining foothold in
Cameroon, Chad and Niger. It is no coincidence
that Shekau made that chilling declaration some
weeks ago in Gwoza, which has provided a suitable
training complex for the insurgents. Something
needs to done, drastically and urgently, before
Maiduguri falls.

3rd September 2014 Nigeria SITREP (Boko Haram)

Confirmed: Airstrikes launched against insurgent forces in Bama. Damage to structures within the city reported.

Confirmed: In a speech (obtained from informed sources) on 2/9/14 given to thousands of fighters drawn from Harakatul-Muhajiriina wal-Mujahidiin and allied Ansorul-Muslimiina Fii Bilaadis-Sudan,  Khalid Al-Barnawi decries the “misguided adventurism” of Abubakar Shekau and calls him “a clear enemy of the Jihad”.

This is in response to the proclamation by Shekau of Gwoza as part of an ‘Islamic Caliphate(Khilafah)’. Khalid Al-Barnawi  in this address denounced the recent proclamation by Shekau and on behalf of Abu Usamah Al-Ansori (who is said to be in Gwoza) disassociated Harakatul-Muhajiriin and Ansorul-Muslimiin from any affiliation and link to Ad-Daulatul-Islamiyyah (The Islamic State) of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.

The Amir of Harakatul-Muhajiriin also praised Allah for the great victory his forces were granted in Bama and announced that as soon as their hold in Bama and Gwoza was consolidated a new operation provisionally named Operation Zalzalah (Earthquake)’ will be launched to ‘liberate’ Maiduguri from the ‘occupying’ army of ‘Shaiton(Satan)’ that is ‘holding’ it.

Analysis: From this speech and recent happenings (sources confirm that a joint unit from Jamaa’atu Ahlis-Sunnah of Sheikh Bukar, Haraktul-Muhajiriin and Ansorul-Muslimiin engaged in offensive combat operations in late August to dislodge forces from Jamaa’atu Ahlis-Sunnah of Shekau from a village near Geidam, Yobe State, which Shekau’s fighters had moved into after the local Army and Police units were ordered out), it is clear that a significant change is going on within the insurgents ranks. Shekau may soon find himself fighting a three-front war against a unified opposing Yusufiyya grouping, CJTF militias and Nigerian Military units. If the emerging Yusufiyya grouping of Bukar Al-Barnawi, Khalid Al-Barnawi an Abu Usamah Al-Ansori  takes on Shekau, that will open a fourth front on their side. Already they are facing off with Cameroon, Nigerian Armed Forces and CJTF militias, plus occasional skirmishes with Chadian troops. Taking on Shekau may be more load than they can handle, presenting a golden opportunity for the Nigerian Government to be proactive for once.

Confirmed: Upto two thousand fighters cross from Cameroon to Nigeria via Madagali and Gwoza. Some are said to be reinforcements for insurgent forces holding Bama, while others are coming to join preparations for the next phase of Al-Bidayah Campaign I.e the already announced assault to seize control of Michika and Bazza.

Residents of Michika LGA of Adamawa State were warned via letters delivered, after the fall of Madagali in August, to the District Head of Michika and the Local Government Chairman that Yusufiyya forces are coming to take over the area and all who wish to remain must pledge allegiance to their authority. This precipitated a mass exodus of the people into the mountains, across the border to Cameroon or to Yola the state capital, while the wealthier ones have all fled outside the conflict zone entirely to Kaduna State.
